We have been helping many people lately that have had problems with squirrel's getting into there attic. This is a very common wildlife issue during the spring in Portland, Oregon. Most houses are not properly sealed to keep squirrels out and can be very welcoming to a mother squirrel looking for a place to build a nest. Although the attic seems like a great place to the squirrel it can create many dangerous risks to both the squirrel and people living in the building. Squirrel's are rodent's and because of this they must constantly chew or gnaw on things to wear down there teeth. Many people did not know that rodent's teeth never stop growing and that is why they chew so much creating lots of damage.
Last week we inspected a local church that had been having problems with squirrels in the attic. The squirrels had chewed on wires that eventually cause a large light to fall from the ceiling. They had an electrician come out and repair the problems. He did a good job by rewiring the light, but that does not solve the problem. After our inspection we noticed about 8 holes that squirrels used to enter the attic. The church is over 100 years old so it is well built, but has some wear and cracking that created easy entrance for wildlife. We set up one-way doors on the main points and sealed the other holes so the squirrels are able to leave and not return.
We also found years of bird dropping build up that over the years had destroyed the insulation. We recommend that the church has a total attic restoration meaning they remove all damaged insulation and replace it with new insulation. Many cases this entire process can be covered by insurance providers.
